Why Salt?

Matthew 5: 13-16

13 “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.

14 “You are the light of the world – like a city on a hilltop that can not be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.

Be the Salt and the Light of the world!

You have probably heard this statement at some point in time; if you haven’t – God calls his followers to be the Salt and Light of the world.

I have heard this many times and honestly not thought too much about it.

I understood we were to “flavor” the world with our “light”…or at least that is what I thought I understood!

As I have been working on today’s post, I have realized a much deeper meaning to these verses.

If we back up just a bit and look at verses 11-12 they state:

11″God Blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers. 12 Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way.

God is telling us – being mocked or made fun of for following him…it’s a good thing!

Some might think that sounds crazy because who wants to be mocked or made fun of…for anything?

If you combine these verses all together, you get a very distinctive picture from God!

If you do an internet search for – uses for salt; you will find that MANY uses come up!

Salt can be used for: cleaning stains, making brooms and brushes last longer, cleaning rust, shining copper and brass…the list goes on and on.

Salt is also a preservative! Salt was used in previous generations to preserve meats so that they would not go bad. (I am sure that this process is still used today in some shape or form)

Salt can also be used, in a different form, to melt ice and prevent freezing.

So we are to be – the Salt of the World; why salt?

Maybe salt was the chosen metaphor because of all of the things salt can do!

Lets put it into context of “us”:

(Disclaimer…this is my interpretation, I do not have any formal biblical education or background, this is just what was laid on my heart)

We can help preserve the kingdom of God!

We can be the flavor of Gods word. If we live our lives as God wishes, the example others see will “flavor” their opinion of God.  If we are helping, loving, caring and doing for others selflessly…we are flavoring the word of God. We are living proof that God’s word is alive and that it does create beautiful and wonderful things.

God can use his followers to melt away “cold hearts”! Sometimes, life is rough and people can take a beating! Enough years and rough times can cause a person’s heart to harden or become cold. God can use his followers to show his love, compassion and support to those who need it. Therefore, using his followers to melt a cold heart! Also, as salt melts ice…it also keeps ice from forming again. Yet again, through relationships of friends, church family, family or any other followers of Christ…a Cold Heart can be prevented.

In the world today, there are many things that can lead a person astray. Drugs, violence, sex, pornography, debt, adultery, alcohol and the list could go on and on. We all come into this world as a baby – as we experience life we all make different choices. No one is better than anyone else; but God can use his followers to help “polish up” some of what life has built up in others.

You hear it often someone in prison turns to Christ, a murderer or a thief turn to Christ. Anyone, from any direction of life, can turn to Christ! As the followers of Christ, he can use us to help that be seen! Many who may have felt unworthy, have been convinced otherwise by someone who God has placed into their lives.

Now, what if the “salt” loses it flavor? What if the “salts” consistency changes? Will that salt still be as effective for Gods preservation of his kingdom? For “flavoring” God’s Word? For melting away “cold hearts” and preventing them? Will that “salt” still be able to “polish up” some of what life has built up in others?

The answer is…No.

Salt can be very useful in many ways, but if it is left sitting out in the elements and not protected or covered, it will go bad.

It sounds a bit like us huh?

We can be useful to God in so many ways! But we have to be nourished with his word! We have to know his word and his heart! He has to be #1 in our lives…or we could easily “go bad” and no longer be as productive in our faith.

Again, this is my perspective on this verse 🙂

Now God also says to his followers are the Light of the World.

Can you hide a city that is sitting on top of a mountain? Its light at night can be seen for miles. If we live for Christ, we will glow like lights, showing others what Christ is like. We hide our light by (1) being quiet when we should speak, (2) going along with the crowd, (3) denying the light, (4) letting sin dim our light, (5) not explaining our light to others, or (6) ignoring the needs of others. Be a beacon of truth – don’t shut your light off from the rest of the world.

The above was an excerpt from my bible – I couldn’t come up with a more perfect way of explaining, being the light!

You have likely heard the song, This Little Light of Mine.

Well, that is us folks! We are a little candle with a little flame…but if we find enough kindle and branches we can help ignite a huge fire! We alone are a small flame…but if we share our flame; let it shine for all to see, we together with others will be a giant flame!

We have to be proud of our Faith and share it with pride! Yes, not all will like it! No, you won’t always be the most popular! Yes, sometimes it could be dangerous! God, he is worth every risk possible! Because if you proclaim his name and share his word, his presence and his light…there will be no greater reward!

Life is our Job!

God is our Boss!

Heaven is our Retirement!

Lets get out there and be the Salt and the Light!!!!
