Mark 7:20-23 New International Version (NIV)

20 He went on: “What comes out of a person is what defiles them. 21 For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23 All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”

There use to be laws regarding what people could and could not eat. Eating certain foods would make you unclean.

In the New Testament, in the book of Mark, Jesus gets frustrated and tells the crowd of people in chapter 7: 15 “It’s not what goes into your body that defiles you; you are defiled by what comes from your heart.

Later, confronted by his disciples – whom also did not seem to understand that “food” was not what “defiled” a person’s body – Jesus states again (Mark 7: 18-19) 18 “Don’t you understand either?” he asked. “Can’t you see that the food you put into your body cannot defile you? 19 Food doesn’t go into your heart, but only passes through the stomach and then goes into the sewer.”

Today, we put a LOT of thought into what we put into our bodies. We try to eat healthy, organic, “clean” foods. We exercise, bath and try to keep up on our sleep. We go to the Doctor for check ups to make sure that everything is working and healthy inside of us.

We think about “heart health” from a physical perspective…but how much attention to we put on our “heart health” from a spiritual perspective?

On a daily basis, just stop to think, what all is out there…that we feed into our mind. Intentionally or unintentionally…think about this too in regards to your children.

We have television where partial nudity, vulgar language and non biblical behavior is exhibited. We often watch these shows (sometimes with the kids in the room) and laugh at the “humor”. We don’t think much of it because it is fine in the eyes of society, it is approved to be on prime time…so who cares…it’s funny/entertaining, what harm is there?

We also have advertisements everywhere. We have giant billboards with half-naked people promoting alcohol, smoking and gambling. Sex sells – it is everywhere! Again, socially acceptable – just because we see it, doesn’t mean we will do it or be effected by it!

The radio – Sometimes we can’t even understand the words that are being said in some of the songs we hear. If we read the lyrics, we would likely be shocked at what our kids (and ourselves) are hearing.

Video games – Shooting, blood, gore, language…basically we let ourselves and our kids play games that are depicting everything we would NEVER want them to do in real life. We pass it off though as “just a game” and we assume…no harm no foul.

The internet – Yikes…EVERYTHING is there! Did you know that statistically the average boy will have seen pornography by the time he is 9 years old. Not too shocking when you think about the fact the internet is in their rooms, on their phone and at their friends houses.

Again, you think – So what…Miranda seriously you need to get with the times…there are worse things that could happen!

If we really read this verse; this comment from Jesus – we will see that NO these are the “worst”!

These are the things that we absorb into our minds; our kids absorb into their minds!

All of our actions, our sins, begin as a thought! Everything that we say or do starts as a thought!

Our thoughts are influenced by what we see and hear.

Our kids are most vulnerable to this, they are so impressionable that when they see these things or hear them – they naturally are curious. This is why guarding them and ourselves is very important! Crucial!

In Philippians 4:8 Paul advises us – and think about what is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, and admirable.

In the world’s view – these are the boring things! For example – don’t lust if you see a pretty woman or an attractive man, guard your thoughts.

If you are married and you take part in pornography…what does that do for you or to you? You allow yourself to see another woman or man and you find pleasure in it. How does that positively affect your marriage in any way? What God has joined together as one, between you and your spouse, there is now “another” that has been brought in. Whether its intentional or not.

Jesus warns us of these things for a reason…to protect us! They are the things that, if we allow them in, can destroy our hearts spiritually!

Be intentional today and pay attention to your thoughts and what you are allowing to influence your heart and mind. Imagine Jesus sitting next to you, reading your thoughts and your heart…(because he is there) Would he approve? Would you be ashamed or proud?

What you feed your heart and mind are ultimately what will determine your “heart health” spiritually!
